USA TODAY Says Housewives is Desperately Dragging PDF Print E-mail

I'm beginning to feel more confident about my recent episode commentaries that have criticized the second season of Housewives. I thought for a moment that I may be one of the very few dissatisfied viewers, but in a recent USA Today article, Robert Bianco has also criticized the writers of Desperate Housewives for a lacking second season. Bianco has drawn on some of the same points that I've spoken about in the "Next" and "You'll Never Get Away From Me" commentaries, particularly the common variable that seems to be missing between all the housewives.

"Yet more than anything, what's missing is an overarching story strong enough to tie the episodes and the housewives together," Bianco says, "Mary Alice's suicide didn't just launch Housewives. By forcing the remaining friends to re-evaluate their lives while uniting them in a quest to understand Mary Alice's death; it set the tone for the show and lent it depth." Bianco further explains that " in three weeks we've hardly seen the four stars together. And they didn't share a scene [Sunday] at all."  As you know, in the "Next" commentary I complained that we hardly saw the women come together for Bree following Rex's funeral. And when they did come together, it was an awkward and unnecessary scene discussing Zach Young and Mary Alice, which I felt was uncalled for considering the circumstances. Since that scene, there has barely been any interaction between the four (five counting Edie) neighbors. I think the writers are focusing too much on these individual storylines (of which Bianco says don't work as well -- for example, last week when Felicity Huffman attempted to attend her son's first day of school, or "Bree's flat act-break insult to the detective.") instead of scripting well-needed moments of character bonding like we saw last season.

Bianco does offer one explanation to this stalled second season -- Marc Cherry hasn't written one episode yet. I suppose that could be the reason why Housewives can't compare to last season. Sounds like Marc Cherry needs to pay a little more attention to the television show that got him his second big break, and quit with that new show they have him working on.

The USA Today article can be read here.

Im enjoying the show really, It would be nice to see them in scenes together but there are still about 20 more episodes to come! IMO nothing will beat the first season, but im sure Marc Cherry will come up with some great storylines for the housewives

Here's the difference (for me) between the first season and now:

It's totally no longer important for me to watch Desperate Housewives as it airs. As long as I know it got recorded by Tivo, then that's good enough and I'll get around to watching it whenever. Last season's finale was incredibly disappointing and the whole concept of the show has gone downhill since -- predictible and, too often, annoyingly silly.

I'm satisfied with the season so far. I even didn't notice that the Housewives haven't spent time together b/c I'm enjoying their separate storylines tremendously. But Bianco's point about Marc Cherry not having written an episode this season is actually off. Marc Cherry has not written a full episode of DH since the Pilot. Since then, he and his writters have split up the individual storylines amongst themselves and then try and blend each writer's portion together into a whole episode. Cherry, for example, mostly writes the Van de Kamp stories (which may be why they are consistenly MY favorites!) because they're loosely based on his life. So technically, Cherry has written something in every single episode so far. I suspect the slow start that some people are talking about is just due to the show setting up new story threads. And I wouldn't really expect much Housewives interaction right now because Lynette is just getting started at her job (people in the ad industry work ridiculously long hours), and Bree is grieving-- I'd imagine her friends would want to give her some space just b/c she seems like the kind of person who'd need it to really grieve. Wow, I really rambled there, didn't I??? Sorry!

Personally I'm really enjoying the second season. *shrug* It's just started so it's expected that it'd start off slower.
