Note: If you have not watched the episode yet and don't want to spoil it for yourself, breeze past this. Spoilers are included!

I don't know if I can take this roller coaster ride of a second season; so far, the pattern of quality episodes has been down ("Next"), up ("You Could Drive a Person Crazy"), and then slightly down ("You'll Never Get Away From Me"). There is a spark missing from this second season, and as I began to write this review (I tend to do it in an unordered fashion and then piece it together), my "goggle alerts" hit my inbox -- and what should I find? An article written by the New York Daily News (thank you "guest"!). I've disagreed with many of the critics who have praised this season, so it was to my surprise that someone actually had the stugats to write down exactly what I've been complaining about. Mr. David Biancull, I do agree with you that a cleanup is needed on Housewives, stat.

Unlike the season premiere, there were parts of this episode that I enjoyed. However, I have some complaining to do.

I need to know right now, Marc Cherry, the reasoning behind Andrew's unrelenting, down-right hatred towards Bree. As most of us know, since we've all been teenagers at one time or another, there was a time in our lives when we hated our parents. Its natural and seems to be prescribed in our pubescent DNA. We also know that Desperate Housewives is about extremes, playing up to the daily lives of people in suburbia. Put two and two together and naturally you can have a tumultuous teen-parent relationship, but what I don't understand is the logic behind this sharp and bitter anger that Andrew displays towards his mother. I mean, the boy is just down right cruel -- to the point of being evil. For a few moments there I was waiting for a scene where Andrew comes down the stairs, pisses on the rug, and says "You're gonna die up there." Don't tell me his disgust stems from Bree's "perfectionism" and a refusal to serve anything in the cookbook below Osso Bocco. Episode after episode it gets worse -- and what's lacking is some explanation. I can't stand when a writer serves you something with no substance behind it -- and that is exactly what's on the dinner table. From the spoilers that have surfaced on the Internet it appears that things are going to (unfortunately) get much worse between Andrew and Bree -- to the point where I have to draw the line and say it is an unnecessary storyline. We'll see if it comes to fruition.

The Susan storyline has become drab. I wish they would write something entertaining for her -- something of substance -- because her life cannot revolve around Mike, Carl, and Edie.

I was asked in the chat whether I believe Bree's lie detector results. For all of you who missed the episode, Bree took a lie detector to prove to detectives that she didn't kill or poison Rex. During the lie detector test, she was asked about her relationship with George, and a question to the tune of "Are you in love with George?" was asked. Bree said no, but blatantly failed. Twice. Now, back to my opinion about the results -- I don't believe that Bree is in love with George, but she sure has feelings for the creep. I know all you Bree fan's can't fathom how this could happen -- frankly, I'm having a little trouble myself -- but it makes for good television. Although, wouldn't it be nice if we got a chance to see the grieving widow before she starts playing hide the handcuffs with Georgy? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

altThe second unveiling of the evening was a side of Gabrielle that we've never seen before. Compassion. I agree with Biancull that the Carlos / Gabrielle storyline is getting better every episode, and the last emotional scene between the two was well done and well written. However.. (don't you just hate that?) it appears that it'll be moot, considering spoilers that have surfaced. Its all becoming clear to me. That first season spark is gone.

The New York Daily News said it best when they highlighted that in season one, the central characters were all tied together by the mystery of Mary Alice's suicide. We got a bit of their daily lives mixed with their relationships together, and that made for great storylines and great television. The twine that held them together during the first season is missing and that's one of the reasons why I think this season, so far, stinks. I'll end it here and give you the episode run down.

The Run Down

Competition emerges between Susan and Edie over the family show at their local church. Susan finds out that daughter Julie has entered with "Aunt Edie" on guitar. In a fit, Susan seeks help from pianist Betty Applewhite and a show down emerges where Julie picks her mother over Edie to star in the show. Right before their performance, Susan approaches Edie in the Church and apologizes for her behavior, allowing Edie to take the stage with her daughter. Having forgotten her guitar, the vampy neighbor gets on stage and plays piano. Much to Susan's delight Edie is better at the guitar than the pearly whites.

altBree kicks out her mother-in-law and speaks to detectives about their investigation into Rex's death. Willing to prove it to the police -- but most of all her children -- she takes a lie detector test and passes all the questions, except one. Looks like Bree has some unresolved romantic feelings for George. Afraid that the police might think she is in cohorts with George, she asks him to take a lie detector test as well. Surprisingly, or not-so-surprisingly (considering George is a pharmacist and probably took drugs to relax his blood pressure), George passes.

Lynette attempts to take a day off of work to accompany her oldest boy to his first day of school, but is met by hefty opposition. She comes up with a crafty way to be there anyway -- the new video conferencing equipment at her work. (Snooze).

Mike is still on the hunt for his supposed biological son, Zach Young. He pays a visit to Felicia Tillman (sister of Martha Huber) and the two exchange unpleasentries. Felicia tells Mike that Paul would be Better off Dead.

Gabrielle daydreams of reuniting with John, so much as to stalk him at his various lawn jobs. Much to her dismay, she finds that John is already trimming another woman's hedges. The two talk over their relationship and Gabrielle has an epiphany; her fantasies of John were nothing more than childs play. She pays a visit to Carlos in prison and the two have a touching moment.

sorry for my bad english but I'm french and I had the chance to see the episodes of the new season and I really love the part of Gaby and Carlos. The part with Bree is good too but she's always wearing black and have horrible hair. The story I can't stand now is the one with susan, SO BORING with her ex-husband and Edie and her jealousy! Come on!Do your own business with mike and leave them alone! But expect the part with susan I think the second season is great!!!
"Andrew's unrelenting, down-right hatr

Let me start off by saying I agree that this season has been slow. Last season I got to the point I was hoping they would start to focus a little more on the comedy aspects of the show instead of the drama (I was on the edge of my seat TOO Much!). This season they have done just that and I find myself not as interested. Be careful what you wish for I guess. LOL

On to the issue at hand. Candice, You were asking about "Andrew's unrelenting, down-right hatred towards Bree". Perhaps I misunderstood but near the end of season one when Bree discovered Andrew was daveling in homosexuality she expressed her concern that he could go to hell. She goes on to tell him she needs him in heaven with her.

It was at this point Andrew started to plot his revenge (as you know). As far as I can tell Andrew has been awful to Bree not because of her condemning the gay issue but for suggesting she'll be in heaven while he'll be in hell. It made Andrew furious to think that she believed she was better than him.

Of course Bree doesn’t think she’s better than Andrew, she was only express concern based on her personal beliefs (but she could have been more careful with her choice of words)

As we know, Andrew was nasty to Bree before this incident but I think this is what is fueling his animosity at this point.

Did I misunderstand? I would like to know what others think.

I agree this season is not as good as last. The episodes have been kind of dull and could deffinately use better writing and more suprises. The Susan storyline is SO boring.I barely watch when she,s on.The Bree storyline is what about Rex also kinda tiresome.by the way I hate her hair this pulled back in that tight bun,and she,s Always wearing Black nothing else.Gabrielle I guess her story will start to pick up when she,s pregnant. All though I got to say I don,t like the idea of her being pregnant,I think She should have got an Abortion,She,s obviously very dumb not to have,I mean she didn,t want kids. And Lynette is ok I find the story about her work and kids Blah.I,m wondering when there going to have Tom,s Second life show.So far this season is Not up to par with Last season. It,s seems since the writers and everyone saw the show was a hit, they got kind of comfortable and the storys are lacking.Hopefully it picks up>

Does this mean the end for John? Does anyone think he'll come back? Or is he & Gabby finished?

Things are a touch slower and the writing could do with improvment (the acting is just fabulous, though, especially the Ricardo/Eva dynamic), but I have faith stuff will pick up sooner than later and I'm still loving second season.

Hey! I agree with you about the whole new season, it isn't as good as last one, but like in many other series, usually the first episodes of a new season are a little boring, just because they set the ground of new dramas. I mean, I hope it's because of that and soon we will look back on the event of these (not so fun) episodes and understand what it was all about; so in some point (soon) it will get better.

Of course I can't stand is Susan's storyline.... I get sleepy ; her world can't be just about Edie and Karl, I mean, there must be something more, if not, then she really should kill herself.

Also, something I've noticed is that the ladies haven't talked to each other since Rex's funeral, when in last season they were usually together, at least in a couple of scenes.

Anyway, lets hope its old sparkle comes back soon.

P.S. I loved Gabrielle and Carlos’ scene. They are the best of the show so far (for me)

I am totally loving this season. The Susan/Edie storylines are cute and funny and I am so loving Bree. I will admit that I screamed NO at the TV when George passed the lie detector test, but then he was telling the truth. He didn't poison Rex......he drugged him with the wrong medication, which is technicaly not poisoning him....LOL

I am trying to get into the Applewhite storyline. Don't get me wrong, Alfe Woodard is an exceptional actress but she hasn't been given a whole lot to do. I hope Marc Cherry gives her a little more meat storyline wise.

The big surprise to me is Gabrielle. I have never much cared for her, but especially after this episode, I am loving her a whole bunch.

Plays well with Others....
Thanks You!

Thank you for your comment and also -- thanks for pointing out that mistake!
I'm Loving It

Sorry, but I don't agree with your assessment at all. I've been loving this season just as much as last season. In fact, I wasn't even hooked on DH last season until after episode 4 so in my view the second season's really off to a great start. But you know, to each his/her own! I do hope the season will get better for you though. One slight nitpick about your critique: the article by Bianculli you cited is from the New York Daily News, not the Times -- BIG difference between the two papers, especially for a native New Yorker
I agree.

I really do agree with your assessment of the season thus far. I've been wondering why I have not been so enthusiastic about watching my favorite show, and now I realize that some kind of "spark" is missing from the shows overall storyline.
