As many of you know, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is a
charity that is close to the heart of Ricardo Chavira. Recently,
along with co-star James Denton, Chavira helped to promote last
Friday’s Lee National Denim Day,
where participants were allowed to wear jeans to work, and in exchange
made a $5 donation to aid in the fight against breast cancer.
Through the participation of about 29,000 companies, the nationwide
fund raiser was able to bring in $8 million dollars, all of which was
donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
While that’s an accomplishment in itself, the actor is also hoping that through his role as a spokesman,
he encourages Latino women to get screened early on for the cancer,
especially those living in Latin America. "The death rate is very
high because a lot of them are in your lower income areas
socioeconomically,” he says. “They don't detect it early enough
because they don't have healthcare or health insurance. Another
main reason why it's been hidden a lot is a lot of Latinos won't allow
their women to go to the doctor because they don't want a male doctor
checking out their wife or their daughter or their sister."
